If you’re learning Spanish and love gaming then why not combine both and have fun while learning something new?
In this article, I’ll share some of my picks of some fantastic games that you can play to level up your Spanish, no matter if you’re a Spanish noob or already have the platinum achievement under your belt.
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)
- Valorant (2020)
- Minecraft (2011)
- Spider-Man 2 (2023)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023)
- Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)
- Wrapping Up
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)
Even if you’re not looking to learn Spanish, the Uncharted series is a blast to play, especially if you’re a fan of the action-adventure genre.
The entire Uncharted series has 5 mainline entries. But, the last game is my favorite game in the series.
Uncharted 4 is a particularly great game to play for learning Spanish particularly because it’s considered to be one of the best Spanish dubs. The dub retains the same humor as the English version and the voice acting is top-notch.
You can find written documents that can give you context for the story and the places you’re visiting.
If you’ve always wanted to fulfill the dream of being Indiana Jones, Uncharted 4 is the closest thing you can play.
Valorant (2020)
You might be surprised to see a game like Valorant on this list since you would expect to learn Spanish from a story-heavy game.
But, since I played this game when I had just started learning Spanish, I learned a lot when I played with a few friends who already spoke Spanish.
The game features full Spanish support and I recommend playing it with some Spanish friends. I guarantee you’re going to have a blast. Whenever I was playing badly, like a true gamer, I blamed high ping.
That was until one of my Spanish Valorant buddies recommended I contact Optimum servicio al cliente and get one of their internet packages. Since then, my friends know that I’m just a bad player.
Minecraft (2011)
It feels like whenever I’m writing a top games list, I have to add Minecraft somewhere. But, it’s always for a good reason.
The game has full support for Spanish language and I recommend playing it especially if you’ve just started to learn the language. The game has no spoken dialog and the interface is very minimal which makes it perfect to learn the Spanish words one by one.
Not only that, Minecraft also has a tutorial world for Spanish speakers in the Education version. The tutorial is meant for students and educators who are new to Minecraft or just need a refresher on the controls.
Spider-Man 2 (2023)
Spider-Man 2 has been one of my favorite games I’ve played in recent years.
The game has fast-paced gameplay, a variety of missions and side quests, and an on-point recreation of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
The voices and text in the game have a brilliant Spanish translation and the voice actors have done an amazing job. That one un-named goon yelling “¡Granada!” on top of his lungs while looking at his friend ragdoll away from the same explosion was one of my favorite moments in Spider-Man 2.
The game is particularly interesting because it uses fresh and correct terms in Spanish. The English phrases are perfectly translated into Spanish. Even if you speak basic Spanish, you’re going to be able to follow along.
Spider-Man 2 has some of the most fun gameplay loops I have ever experienced and the game is infinitely replayable once you complete the story.
Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)
I would recommend all three games in the new Tomb Raider trilogy as all of them are great games. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider is the one I enjoyed the most.
The game featured a lot of improvements to the already great gameplay and had a lot of tombs to raid, puzzles to solve, and enemies to fight.
Lara’s adventure fully supports Spanish so the game can be a great way to practice the language and learn new words. There are some high points where the action gets hectic and audio cues can be hard to understand, but you can always look up the meaning of the word online which can be a lot of fun in itself.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023)
Zelda games have been some of the best-selling and most widely played series in gaming history. The latest addition to The Legend of Zelda franchise is great for improving your Spanish skills, as they have a ton of dialog and written text.
Not just that, it’s just a great game to play, with tons of puzzles, adventures, and action. As you play the game, you will receive a lot of suggestions, directions, and hints from NPCs, which gives you plenty of chances to try out your Spanish comprehension skills.
Before you play this game, I also recommend playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which is the first game in this rebooted franchise.
Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)
When I played Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, I never thought I would include it in any top games list, unless it was one of the worst games ever. But now, three years later, most of the issues that plagued cyberpunk are now fixed and I can happily recommend it.
Most RPGs are usually very long and don’t have good Spanish dubs. However, Cyberpunk 2077 is an exception with its amazing Spanish translation and voiceovers. The inventory text and tutorials are also in Spanish so be ready to read a lot.
Spanish isn’t the only reason to play the game. Cyberpunk 2077 also features Keanu Reeves. That alone is a great reason to pick the game up today.
Wrapping Up
Learning the Spanish language through movies, shows, and video games can be a great way to pick up on some of the intricacies of the language. It can be a great way to understand some of the nuances in the context of some words.
