Following the end of the holiday season, January is known for reduced budgets and lower sales. The same goes for the PC hardware market, as people return to work/school with empty pockets. The Steam Hardware survey for January 2024 paints an interesting picture. The most adopted (sold or otherwise) GPU among Steam users was the GeForce RTX 4060 laptop, followed by the RTX 3060 laptop GPU. Even the third-most purchased device featured a laptop GPU, the RTX 2050.
The RTX 4060 mobile gained close to +1% (0.58%) user share on Steam, while the 3060 mobile gained +0.38%. The RTX 2050 mobile was adopted by +0.17% of users, and the most popular desktop GPU, the RTX 3050, also gained +0.17% share. The GeForce RTX 4080 laptop (found in pricey, high-end notebooks) was the fifth most-adopted GPU with a user share of +0.16%. AMD GPUs are almost absent from the list, with the RX 7900 XTX being the only RDNA 3 GPU (0.34%), behind the RTX 4080 (+0.75%) and RTX 4090 (+0.93%).
The CPU share on Steam didn’t change much through January. AMD gained a +0.59% share among Windows users in January and +1.46% among Linux users. This increased the chipmaker’s share to 34.25% and 70.49% on the two platforms, respectively. Conversely, Intel’s share dropped to 65.70% and 29.81% on Windows and Linux platforms, respectively.
