NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 mobile GPU is about to hit the market to meet the demands of the ultra-high-end audience. Based on the AD104 (same as the RTX 4080 desktop) die, it features 9,728 FP32 cores paired with 16GB GDDR6X memory. The bus width is the same as its desktop counterpart (256-bit), but the memory frequency has been toned down to 16Gbps. The L2 cache is pegged at 64MB, and the external bandwidth peaks at 576GB/s.
Going by these numbers, the GeForce RTX 4090 mobile should be slower than the RTX 4080 DT but a smidge faster than the RTX 3080 Ti DT. Luckily, mydrivers were able to test a device fitted with the Lovelace mobile flagship to give us an exact idea of the gaming performance.
The GeForce RTX 4090 is 40-50% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti mobile (formerly the fastest mobile GPU), with certain titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 extending the lead to nearly 70%. Compared to the RTX 3080 mobility, the RTX 4090 is at least 50-60% faster and over 70% in the above-mentioned titles.
The RTX 4090 mobile is still nowhere as fast as the desktop-grade 4090. We’re talking about a whole generational gap of 70-80%, if not more. In fact, the RTX 3080 Ti (desktop) is nearly as fast as the RTX 4090 mobile in most gaming workloads. Thermal constraints leading to slower clocks, smaller dies, and lower TBPs limit mobile GPU performance considerably.
